Configure markups via Google Tag Manager (GTM)

What are scripts?

The script is a term used in programming to talk about code snippets used to shape tools. Some examples of Scripts you might have in the engine could be:

  • Connection with Google Hotel Ads if you run campaigns (free booking links are not necessary).

  • Integrations with comparison widgets (The Hotels Network, 123compare.me, Triptease)

  • Integrations with chatbots so they appear in the engine (Hijiffy, Quicktext)

  • Pixels to register the results of Facebook campaigns

  • Changes of styles via CSS (changes in engine colors or typography). In the new version of the engine, style changes will be managed directly through the Back Office manager, with the predefined options offered there.

What is Google Tag Manager (GTM) and how does it work?

It is a system completely external to the engine. It is a centralized way to influence certain engine functionalities externally.

The new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is managed through GTM. Here you can see the email where we informed you of this.

It is a tag management system that allows you to update your website, booking engine, or mobile app quickly and easily, with tracking codes and related code snippets, collectively referred to as tags.

Google Tag Manager works with a single JavaScript code snippet that you add to your website as a container for all the tags you want to manage. When a user triggers a tag (e.g., by clicking a link or loading a page), GTM retrieves it and inserts it into your website's code.

How do I activate GTM?

If you don't have a GTM account, you can follow the steps to create one at the following link: Set up and install Tag Manager, each type of Script may have a different configuration, so it is advisable to speak with the companies that provided it to help you install it.

In any case, we have created a small summary so you have a generic example for inserting a tag within Google Tag Manager while you copy the one you already have created within the Witbooking Back Office in Integrations > Markup Manager

Create a new tag of type “Custom HTML”

  • In the “HTML” box, paste exactly the same code you would put in markup

  • Choosing a trigger is the “complex” part:

    • This depends on the “Location” field that had to be configured in our markup:

      • “Step 1” → The trigger would be our room selection or property selection event if it's an aggregator

      • “Step 2” → The trigger would be our checkout event

      • “Confirmation” + printOneTime → The trigger would be our booking confirmation event

      • "All Pages" -> trigger "All Pages"

In this last step, we select the trigger, where we want the Script to be activated.

Once it's ready, we save and it will be created.

How to install GTM in the Witbooking engine

We need to ensure that the container number (the GTM ID) is connected within the engine's Back Office, in Settings > Google Analytics > GTM Codes:

WIHP, 123compare.me, The Hotels Network Mark-ups

For these 3 providers, you must provide us with your establishment ID given by these companies via email to soporte@witbooking.com. Our agents will enter it into our database.

The new way to manage these issues is completely external to Witbooking, so we at Witbooking will no longer have access to make changes, nor will we be responsible for their correct installation once they are installed. Chatbot, analytics, etc. companies should assist you with this installation.
